Depollution is the process whereby all the hazardous waste is removed from the vehicle, prior to scrapping. The Government guidance on depollution, ‘Depolluting End-of-Life Vehicle Guidance’ says ‘The ELV (End of Life Vehicle) Directive introduces measures to promote and increase recycling and to further protect the environment by requiring adequate depollution (e.g. draining of fluids such as engine oil) and sets minimum technical requirements for the treatment of ELVs.’

 

This guidance states that if a car is depolluted, it must be done so to a particular standard, and in an Authorised Treatment Facility, which has been approved by the Environment Agency, and has a site for storage and a site for treatment. There is a particular process also, which has to be followed, which we have detailed in the infographic below.
